Enclosure in Carroweighter

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Located on a SE-facing slope, with the round tower of Oran (RO034-080003-) c. 250m to the SSW. Geophysical survey (11R0074) of possible routes for a re-directed section of the N60 at Oran identified a number of possible enclosures defined by ditches (Gimson and Regan 2011). Archaeological testing (11E0247) disproved many of the anomalies, but a group of four features in Field 2 proved to be archaeological, and elements of the field system (RO034-081003-) may extend into the area. This enclosure (1) is a circular area (int. diam. c. 25m; ext. diam. c. 33m) defined by a penannular V-sectioned ditch (max. Wth 2.8m; max. D 1.1m), which was re-cut once and had slight hints of an internal bank. It has a SE-facing entrance (Wth 4m), and a section through one of the ditch-terminals produced coarse pottery of Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age character and animal bone that yielded a C14 date of 753-410 cal BC. Enclosure (RO034-112002-) is c. 55m to the E and enclosure (RO034-112003-) is c. 15m to the S. (O’Hara 2011, 5, 7, 22-3) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 3 December, 2014
