Enclosure in Ballyedmonduff

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Ballyedmonduff holds a circular enclosure on the SE slopes of Three Rock Mountain, its earth and stone bank still marking a level space wide enough for a small household. Trees now crowd every side, and ploughing has cut through the middle, yet the granite boulder at the northern end remains like a forgotten doorstop. Whoever built it likely watched the valley, kept fire, and left behind only a line the land has half-swallowed.
Situated on the SE slopes of Three Rock Mountain in a forestry plantation. An enclosure which comprises of a roughly circular, level space (int. diam. 14.6m) defined by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.1m; H 1.3m). There is an entrance in the SE (Wth 1.85m) and a large granite boulder lying against the N terminal of the bank. There is also a gap in the SSW caused by machinery (Healy 1975, 1-19). It is totally surrounded by trees and deep ploughing has taken place within the interior of the site. According to Healy (1975) there were hut sites (DU025:031002-) adjoining a ringfort.
