Enclosure in Ballyconra

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Ballyconra holds a hidden rectangular enclosure, perhaps a house inside, buried beneath flat pasture where cattle still graze. It joins a long row of similar forgotten places, waiting for people to remember that the land already knows them.
In flat undulating lowland, in pasture. A rectangular enclosure (dims. c. 30m NE-SW; c. 20-25m NW-SE) identified by geophysics (Nicholls 2017 unpublished Geophysical report; Deery and Crowley 2017 unpublished EIS) carried out in advance of a proposed solar farm. One of a number of enclosures (KK004-043----; KK004-044----; KK004-045----; KK004-047----; KK004-048----; KK004-049----; KK004-050----; KK004-051-; KK004-052----; KK004-053---- and KK004-054----) identified in the vicinity by geophysics. It adjoins a similarly sized rectangular enclosure (KK004-056----) to the E and may be related to the settlement row (KK004-046----) 135m to the S which extends eastward. Within the enclosure is a smaller rectangular structure aligned NE-SW which may be a house. The monument is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 September 2018
