Enclosure in Ballybannon — Report the wrong picture

Ballybannon is a hidden ringfort, visible only when drought stresses the crops. The earth itself draws the circle in shadow, revealing a chamber that no longer appears on any survey. That is the danger of memory: it waits for hunger to return. What was built there may have been forgotten on purpose. The land remembers shape before it remembers meaning, and people must learn the difference or be consumed by it.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Aerial photographs (CUCAP ASW 23, BDH 86, BGH 34) show circular area surrounded by cropmark of fosse, probably ringfort site (est max. diam. c. 35m). Aerial photograph (BDH 86) shows faint cropmark of fosse of second, smaller enclosure area to NNE (est max. diam. c 30m). No visible surface traces.
