Enclosure in Ardaloo

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Ardaloo in County Kilkenny hid two or three raths in its northern division, though Carrigan dismissed them as insignificant in 1905. They vanished entirely from later surveys, leaving behind a gap where memory should have been. Perhaps they were never grand, only human: shallow ditches, broken walls, or fields that stopped being fields.
Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 208) in his description of Ardaloo townland mentions, 'there are two or three raths in the northern division of the townland, but none of them of any consequence'. There are no enclosures indicated in this townland on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map or the 1946-7 revision. The location of the 'raths' (KK014-088001-/KK014-088002-) within the townland is unknown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 16 June 2020
