Explorer TomEmmetts Garden sits high near Ide Hill, with the Kentish Weald below and rare plants to admire. Frederic Lubbock turned this Edwardian family garden into a home for rare trees and shrubs from around the world. Come for the view; stay for a hillside showing off.
The formal Rose Garden frames wide countryside views with pink and white flowers. In the Rock Garden, alpine plants climb miniature mountainsides of stone, streams and rocky outcrops; the North Garden gives plants bog, shade or rock according to their tastes. The South Garden is full of trees and shrubs from plant-hunting expeditions. The plants have better travel histories than most of us.
Spring brings bluebells in the woodland, while autumn turns the trees and rock garden into a louder display of colour. A wild play area near the Old Stables Tea Room has climbing equipment, and a toy cupboard lends things for the meadow. The tea room occupies former stables, with refreshments after the slopes. Bring the dog on a short lead if you like; the National Trust welcomes them in the garden.
Find Emmetts Garden at Ide Hill, Sevenoaks, TN14 6BA. The Trust charges admission, with parking included, and its daily calendar listed the garden open 10am to 5pm on 24 October 2026; check your own date before travelling. Paths can be steep or uneven, and the woodland route is not surfaced, so consult the accessible route map if needed. Take the hillside at your own pace: even the most ambitious shrub won't complain if you stop for the view.
