Embanked enclosure

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Culliaghmore, County Roscommon, Ireland. The 1837 Ordnance Survey map marked a circular embanked enclosure thirty-five to forty metres wide on the crest of a northwest-southeast esker. Local tradition describes a ring of bushes removed around 1960, though the site is no longer visible in reclaimed pasture.
Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35-40m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on the crest of the SW-facing slope of a NW-SE esker. Described locally as a ring of bushes which was removed c. 1960. It is not visible in reclaimed pasture but it was probably a rath. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
