Embanked enclosure

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Coolteige, County Roscommon, Ireland. It occupies a gentle NE-facing slope where a low earthen bank and faint outer fosse once marked a circular area roughly twenty-four metres across. Field walls and a house site later overlain the perimeter, but the monument is no longer visible at ground level in pasture.
On a gentle NE-facing slope. Described in 1978 as an overgrown circular area (diam. c. 24m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by a low earthen bank with faint traces of an outer fosse (SMR file). The monument was overlain by an E-W field wall, and a N-S field wall overlay the perimeter at W with a house site (RO035-060002-) against the inside of the bank at SW. It is not now visible at ground level in pasture. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
