Elizas Fort is a nineteenth-century sod battery on the River Shannon in County Offaly, built from compacted earth and turf rather than stone. It appears on the Ordnance Survey map as Fort Eliza, yet the meaning of Eliza has not survived. The name may have been a gift of dignity to an ordinary mound, or a small joke recorded seriously by a surveyor. Either way, the fort still belongs to the river: a low ridge of soil holding its shape against time.
