Elizabeth Barrett, a prominent 19th-century poet and later wife of poet Robert Browning, lived at this site from 1838 to 1846, during a significant period of her literary and personal development. The house is important as it was the setting where she wrote some of her most celebrated works before her marriage and relocation to Italy.
