EIRE 80 sign

Laid out in white stone below the tower is the word EIRE and the number 80. During the Second World War these signs were set along the Irish coast to tell pilots, especially American pilots, that they were over neutral Ireland rather than Britain. Number 80 marked the lookout post here, and the stones are still kept white.
