What is recorded here

Eilean Munde is a small burial island in Loch Leven named for Saint Munda, who founded a church there in the seventh century. The chapel became a shared sacred place for communities and rival clans around the loch, whose dead were buried side by side. Ruined walls, carved stones and crowded graves preserve an unusual landscape of common worship across political divisions.

Who made it and when

A Christian community linked with Saint Munda established the island church in the seventh century, and later families maintained its burial ground.

How it was made and used

Builders raised and rebuilt a stone chapel, while generations carried their dead by boat and marked graves across the limited ground.

What was found

Carved stones, memorials and study of the chapel reveal medieval worship followed by centuries of burial for surrounding Highland families.

What remains

The roofless chapel, old grave markers, later monuments, enclosure and boat landing remain on the wooded island.

Why it mattered

Eilean Munde mattered because communities divided by clan and shore shared one island of worship, burial and remembered ancestry.
