What is recorded here

Detached four-stage round-plan lighthouse, commissioned 1857. Lantern to top with glass sides and metal roof, with walkway around having safety rail. Flared rendered walls. Square-headed windows. Semi-detached lighthouse keepers' houses to south having pitched slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks. On 27 November 2006 the light was replaced by a solar powered light with a reduced range of 18 nautical miles.
This lighthouse, with its typically flared walls and roof lantern, performed the critical function of safeguarding mariners along the coast around the west end of Árainn. The accompanying lighthouse keepers' houses complete an interesting ensemble of maritime heritage interest.
