Edward Gwynn was born in 1868 at Aughnagaddy in Ramelton, County Donegal, the second son of a local rector who later taught divinity in Dublin. That northern origin explains why a man from a small Donegal town became the 36th Provost of Trinity College Dublin and a leading scholar of ancient Irish language and legend.
