Edward Dowden, future Shakespeare critic and professor, was born in Cork city on 3 May 1843, three years after his brother John. The merchant household gave a sharp young mind room to turn over language before formal school, and essays written at twelve hint that the house itself first taught him to judge beauty and truth. Cork does not disappear from his life; it remains the place where Dowden's critical fire caught.
