Edinburgh Castle, Fore Well is a medieval well inside the castle rocks. It is old enough to predate most of the visible castle, and simple enough to be forgotten until thirst returns. Soldiers, servants and visitors may have knelt at its edge in every age, drinking water that rose through living stone. The well does not need a legend because it is one: a hole in the rock where the mountain still gives up life.
