What is recorded here

Edinburgh Castle, Fore Well is a medieval well inside the castle rocks. It is old enough to predate most of the visible castle, and simple enough to be forgotten until thirst returns. Soldiers, servants and visitors may have knelt at its edge in every age, drinking water that rose through living stone. The well does not need a legend because it is one: a hole in the rock where the mountain still gives up life.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Edinburgh Castle, Fore Well as Well (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Edinburgh Castle, Fore Well is associated with Edinburgh Castle, a historic fortress first built by the Anglo-Saxons in the 12th century and later held by the Scottish crown. It is important as a key military and political site in Scottish history and as a symbol of national identity.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
