Eddlewood Castle

Castle (medieval)

What is recorded here

Eddlewood Castle stood beside the Meikle Burn within the Hamilton estate, leaving behind only a rubbish mound and wall fragment after regent Murray’s troops dismantled it following the Battle of Langside. Visitors later refreshments in a nearby cave, perhaps drawn to the site by that very destruction story rather than any surviving stone. The castle vanished so completely that even the Hamilton family archive never recorded more than a name and a lost boundary.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Eddlewood Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Eddlewood Castle was a medieval stronghold, likely built in the late 14th or early 15th century, and is remembered for its strategic position in the Scottish Borders, an area frequently contested during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
