Ecclesiastical enclosure in Kilboglashy

The arc of an ecclesiastical enclosure, as indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map, may have been preserved in the field boundaries to the S and W of the church (SL020-109001-) and graveyard (SL020-109002-) (see Keeley 1998, 4 and fig. 3). Evidence from the map suggests that the enclosure was D-shaped with the straight side formed by the Ballysadare River. The field boundaries in the area to the S of the graveyard may have incorporated part of an outer enclosing element, as well as a possible entrance avenue and internal divisions. These field boundaries and structure indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map, were levelled in the late 1980s (M. B. Timoney 2002, 149). An Augustinian abbey (SL020-108----) and a silver and lead mine (SL020-107----) lie c. 250m and c. 500m to the W respectively. Two enclosures (SL020-109006- and SL020-109014-) lie within and were possibly part of the monastic settlement.
