Earthwork in Newtownanner Demesne

Lyons (1934, 260-61) refers to a 'Fort in Newtownanner Demesne. Co. Tipperary OS 6-inch sheets 77 and 83. This seems to have been an Anglo-Norman fortification; it consisted of a bailey, formed by a rectangular bluff with steeply sloping sides, 162 feet [49m] long and 52 feet [16m] wide, on which in later times a castle was built: with an outer bailey 192 feet [58m] long on the western side'. The location of this possible earthwork within Newtownanner Demesne is unknown, however, it is possible that Lyons was misinterpreting landscape features associated with Newtownanner House.
