What is recorded here
Knocknacaheragh holds a hollowed mound facing a ringfort across the Coom river, with an upright stone pointing north and four prostrate stones scattered inside. The 1935 map called it a man-made underground passage, yet no entrance is visible now. The bank may have closed a entrance, or the mound may have grown around a memory of one. Either way, the stones still aim toward the water like a sentence broken in the middle.
In pasture on S-facing slope c. 70m N of Coom river; facing ringfort (CO043-012---) to S of river. Roughly circular area (5.8m N-S; 7.3m E-W) defined by earth and stone bank (H 1.3m), giving appearance of hollowed mound. Interior slightly below ground level; scattered with four large prostrate stones (L 0.48m - 1.2m). Upright stone (H 0.88m) faces bank to N. Marked 'Man-made underground passage' on 1935 OS 6-inch map.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
