Bridgetown Lower holds extensive linear earthworks beside the abbey, visible only from above in a March 1998 aerial photograph. The ground itself gives no clue; the shape appears suddenly in shadow and light, as if the field were drawing a line it had forgotten. What those borders marked, whether a garden, a boundary or a path now buried under grass, the soil no longer explains.

This earthwork is referred to in the 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork - vol. 4 North Cork' (2000, 547-8) under the entry (no. 14381) for Bridgetown Abbey (CO034-027002-). The reference to the earthwork in the entry reads: 'Extensive linear features in field to SW visible in aerial photograph (Dr D.D.C. Pochin Mould, March 1998).' The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000).
