Earthwork in Ballinvana

Earthwork

What is recorded here

Athneasy Fort and Church still occupy the local imagination, but the rectangular earthwork remains nameless and hidden beneath pasture. It may have marked a boundary, a garden, or a forgotten ritual place, yet no human hand has shaped its story because no surface trace remains for memory to grasp. The land keeps its own counsel, withholding the shape that once belonged to someone else.
In pasture NE of farm buildings and 325m NW of the site of Athneasy Church (LI040-104001-) and 170m W of Athneasy Fort (LI040-105----). Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Identified as a rectangular feature on examination of Bord Gáis Éireann aerial photograph (Strip Mapn 4 site 4/44) taken 03/11/1984. No surface remains visible. See attached Bord Gáis Éireann aerial photograph (Strip map 4 site 4/44) and Google Earth orthoimages. Compiled by: Martin Fitzpatrick Date of upload: 21 June 2021
