Earthwork in Ballinscaula

In reclaimed pasture 85m W of a watercourse that marks the townland boundary with Ballinvala. Possible trivallate barrow (LI040-096----) lies 25m to NW. Depicted as a raised circular-shaped area (diam. c. 24m) defined by a scarp on 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. Westropp (1917-19, 178) described the monument as follows; ‘The satellite is well preserved; its fosse is 3 feet to 4 feet (0.9-1.2m) deep and 12 feet to 14 feet (3.6-4.2m) wide, with no trace of an outer ring. The inner bank is 15 feet (4.5m) thick, 5 feet (1.5m) high outside and 1 foot (0.3m) over the oval garth, which is 60 feet (18.2m) across north and south, and 54 feet (16.5m) east and west. It has a nearly levelled annexe to the west, 18 yards (16.6m) across and defined by a shallow hollow; the west corners are rounded off’. The monument is clearly visible as a raised circular shaped-area enclosed by a bank and fosse on aerial photograph (ASIAP (304) 10) taken on 13/09/2002 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 14/09/2019.
