Dunrobin Castle, Tower Lodge

House (19th Century)

What is recorded here

Dunrobin Castle, Tower Lodge stands in Highland as a 19th Century house, recorded without claiming that anyone may enter or that it still belongs to a living family. The main castle already dominated the skyline, so this smaller lodge may have served guests, keepers or workers who needed a separate door into the estate. Its exact purpose has faded, but the chance that it gave ordinary people their own room beside a grand castle makes the place more interesting than a bare label.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dunrobin Castle, Tower Lodge as House (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Dunrobin Castle, Tower Lodge was built in the 19th century as part of the larger Dunrobin Castle estate, which was developed by the Earls of Sutherland, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered as an example of 19th-century domestic architecture in northern Scotland and reflects the expansion and embellishment of historic estates during the period of the "Highland Clearances."

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
