Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dunnottar Castle, Quadrangle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Dunnottar Castle, including its Quadrangle, was originally built by the bishops of Mortain in the 12th century and later held by the Keith family from the 14th century. It is important as a historically significant and well-preserved medieval fortress, renowned for its strategic coastal location and role in Scottish history, including its defense during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
