A 16th-century guardhouse stands at Dunnottar Castle, its position so precise it can be placed within a single metre. It may have watched the castle approach, tested a visitor, or simply marked the edge of a defended line. The chamber could have held a keeper, a lantern, or a weapon ready for sudden use.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dunnottar Castle, East Guardhouse as Guardhouse (16th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Dunnottar Castle, including the East Guardhouse, was built by the Keith family in the 16th century and later held by the Marquess of Huntly. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with Scottish history, notably for its role in safeguarding the Scottish Crown Jewels during the 17th century.
