Dunmahon Church (in Ruins)

Extending out from W side of graveyard (14577). Fragmentary remains of church: no trace of E gable; lengths of S (L 7.7m) and N (L 10.8m) walls survive (max. H 2.75m); W wall has been repaired and capped (Grove White ibid., see photograph opp. 95). Church now entered by steps and gate at W end of S wall; according to Windele, writing c. 1852, this was location of former doorway (ibid.). Interior, full of grave plots, noticeably higher than level of rest of graveyard. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as rectangular church (c. 10m E-W; c. 7m N-S); according to OS Field Book of 1840 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 94), walls were then nearly whole. According to Power (1932, 61), probable length of church was 40ft. Remains of parish church of Dunmahon, reported 'in ruins' in 1774 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 208).
