Dunhill Castle is a ruined tower house south of Dunhill in County Waterford, built by the Anglo-Norman La Poer family in the early 13th century on a rock above the River Anne. Tradition holds that a gunner surrendered the castle to Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1649 because Lady Gyles gave them buttermilk instead of beer, an act Cromwell punished with hanging. The castle passed to Sir John Cole, who never lived there, and decayed into ruin by 1700.
