Dunderave Castle is an L-plan stronghold built around 1500 by the MacNaughton clan after plague destroyed their previous home. It stands on a narrow promontory above Loch Fyne, still occupied today, while the old castle and crannog remnants lie hidden beneath the Dubh Loch at Glen Shira. The name may mean The Castle of Two Oars, suggesting a ferry once crossed there, or The Knoll on the Promontory, describing the land itself. Either way, the clan carried the name from water to rock, and the castle remains a private residence rather than a ruined postcard.
