On Coll, Dùn an Achaidh sits on a steep rocky rise near the road, as though somebody chose the island’s most stubborn doorstep for a home. The surviving walls guard a narrow summit rather than a grand castle courtyard. This is one of Coll’s duns, small fortified places generally linked with the island’s earlier farming communities. The top is roughly ninety feet long and twenty-four feet wide, with two wall lines protecting it and an entrance on the north. A survey of Coll’s duns recorded pottery pieces at this site, though pottery alone cannot give every wall an exact birthday. The ridge is quartzite, and the old wall stone stands out against it. A Coll account describes Dùn an Achaidh as one of the better preserved duns on the island and notes its approach from the main road. That does not make the climb level or safe for everyone. Look at the remaining wall line and then turn around for the broader landscape; a defended place makes more sense when you see the ground it watched. Inventing a named chief would be cheeky even for me. Coll’s visitor site lists Dùn an Achaidh among its historical places, but this is an outdoor ruin rather than a managed attraction. Approach from lawful access ground near the road, mind uneven rock and weather, and leave all pottery and stone exactly where they lie. You need no ticket for the view, only patience and sturdy shoes. The dun may be modest in size; its choice of perch is anything but.
