Drumpellier Country Park near Coatbridge gives you two lochs, woods and enough paths to let an afternoon grow legs. The water draws birds, the trees draw curious walkers, and the playground may draw children faster than anyone can say ‘we will just have a short stroll’. I have never trusted a park with this many good distractions. North Lanarkshire Council says the park covers about five hundred acres. Natural lochs, moorland, woodland and grassland sit together, with the Monklands Canal along its southern edge. Water birds use both the lochs and canal; smaller creatures and wildflowers make the land between them worth a closer look. A visitor centre has wildlife displays, which is useful if you prefer to learn a bird’s name before it flies away. The café can take over once your feet have made their point. Choose a path through the woods or walk by the water and watch how the scene changes. The network offers routes that many wheelchairs and prams can use, while other ground may need more care. Take time for the views across the lochs, then listen where trees soften the sounds around you. Let them set the pace. The country park is at Townhead Road, Coatbridge. The open park offers trails and a play area without needing a booked tour. Keep to suitable paths and give wildlife room, especially at the waterside. Drumpellier can fill a family day, but it is just as good at rescuing a spare hour.
