Dorothy Dermody, called Tommy because ship rules barred her from voyages, grew up in Ballyhasty, Cloughjordan, and competed in the women's individual foil at the 1948 Summer Olympics. She lived to 102, becoming Ireland's oldest living Olympian and the world's oldest living Olympic fencer when she died in Killiney, County Dublin.
