What is recorded here

On a promontory jutting SE from the W shore of Lough Meelagh (dims. c. 2 km E-W; c. 600m-1 km N-S). The promontory (dims. 100m NW-SE; 40m NE-SW; H 2-3m), which is planted with mature deciduous trees, is separated from the mainland by a dry fosse (L 18m; Wth of top 4-7m; int. D 0.4-1.8m; ext. D 0.7-1.3m) at the isthmus. The fosse is crossed by a 19th-century carriageway which circumscribes the promontory altering its contours by infilling and revetting, and adding drystone walls to either end of the fosse. Rath (RO003-090----) is c. 140m to the SW, and promontory fort (RO003-091----) is c. 160m across the lake to the SE. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
