What is recorded here
Doon Grave Yard in County Galway holds an L-shaped patch of earth where the bones of two centuries rest beside the ruined walls of an older church. The oldest readable stone marks 1768, but rough uninscribed markers scatter around it, suggesting deaths so poor or forgotten they never received a name. New graves still appear behind the modern wall, joining the dead who have watched the valley since before records began.
This L-shaped graveyard (c. 103m NE-SW; c. 72m NW-SE) occupies most of the interior of a possible ecclesiastical enclosure (GA108-76003-). The remains of a church (GA108-076001-) stand roughly in its centre. It is enclosed by a modern stone and concrete wall with an entrance at S. The graveyard is still in use and most the burials date to the 19th and 20th centuries. The earliest headstone noted is dated 1768. A number of uninscribed rough grave-markers are also visible.
