Domhnall Ua Buachalla was born in Maynooth, County Kildare, on 3 February 1866. He later became the third and final governor-general of the Irish Free State, serving from 1932 to 1936. Before politics, he ran a combined grocery, bicycle shop and pub in Maynooth and became known as an Irish language activist. In 1907, he refused to pay a fine for painting his grocery wagon with his Irish name, leading to his arrest and the seizure of his goods.
