Dolmen

Stone circle, five-stone

What is recorded here

Five stones circle a chamber barely wide enough for one person to lie down, aligned north-northeast on the Kame River valley. Two have fallen, but the angle remains sharp, pointing across rolling pasture toward another circle a quarter kilometre away. Someone measured that distance, chose that bearing, and built a room for the dark.
On level tract, in rolling pasture on SW side of Kame River valley. Circle complete; W entrance stone and E side stone are prostrate. Orthostats are 1m to 2m L, 0.3m to 0.9m T and 0.8m to 1.1m H. Estimated internal measurement along main axis, aligned NNE-SSW, is c. 2.3m. Five-stone circle (6468) stands 250m to NE. (O Nualláin 1984a, 38, no. 72) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000–2500 BCE), this dolmen may have functioned as a burial or ritual site. Such megalithic structures often held ceremonial significance, though specific folklore or use in this area is not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
