Explorer Tom A gentle walk at Plas Newydd gives me the Menai Strait, a cricket pavilion and a treehouse in one short circuit, which seems almost greedy for a single mile. I followed the National Trust's route past the house in my mind and saved my loudest gasp for the sudden view across the water to the mountains. The marked walk begins at visitor reception on the Anglesey estate and runs down towards the house. It passes the cricket pavilion and former stable block, then the courtyard, croquet lawn and a path above the old swimming pool. Farther on are the Camellia Dell, a grassy area the Marquess's children called the West Indies, and the treehouse and adventure playground. The National Trust lists the circuit as one mile and about half an hour, though stopping for the Strait view is entirely reasonable. I reckon the cricket pavilion has been keeping score of every visitor who says, 'Just a quick look,' then stays for the view. My scorebook is fiction; the house, water and mountains make the delay real enough. Notice how the route alternates between family traces, planted corners and broad landscape. You can be thinking about a children's game one minute and staring across the Menai Strait the next. Plas Newydd is a ticketed National Trust property with changing opening days, so check the current estate calendar before setting out. The trail mixes tarmac, grass and gravel, with shallow downhill steps and an uneven lawn section that may be awkward for wheels after rain. Dogs may join on leads in most grounds but not the Italianate Terrace. Follow the Trust's current route map and allow extra time for every unplanned pause.
