Explorer TomDidsbury Park sits beside Wilmslow Road with trees, grass and the sort of local pride that might make its bowling greens demand a proper introduction. Manchester calls it one of the city's first planned municipal parks; I suspect the original planners drew a neat line, then the flowers immediately told them where they could stick the ruler.
The park was redesigned in the 1920s to give nearby residents room for recreation, and some of those features survive. Today you can wander between open grassland, woodland and planted beds without pretending you've set off on a mountain expedition. The council says an old air-raid shelter may lie beneath the football pitch; that is a possibility, not an invitation to go digging for secret wartime treasure.
There is a children's play area, a junior football pitch, bowling greens and a pavilion. The Pavilion Cafe is also listed by the council, though cafe hours are its own business rather than the park's promise. I like to imagine a stern committee of squirrels inspecting the greens for levelness before a match, but the actual keepers of this place are the people who play, stroll and stop for a chat.
The address is Wilmslow Road, Didsbury, M20 5LS, and Manchester City Council lists park opening from dawn to dusk. Children aged twelve and under are the stated play-area group. Keep dogs out of the play area, games area, bowling green, bird garden and football pitch, and on a lead in the cafe garden. Take an unhurried loop and let the park prove that a good city afternoon needs no grander itinerary than a path and somewhere to sit.
