Diarmait Ua Briain died in Cork in 1118 after losing a brutal four-year struggle for Munster to his brother Muirchertach Ua Briain. He had commanded Irish fleets abroad, broken sacred oaths to seize power, and fathered sons who inherited the partitioned land. His life moved from exile to command, then capture and death, leaving behind a kingdom split among rival men.
