Dervotstown Castle was a tower house belonging to Barnaby Hill when the Down Survey mapped Killua parish in 1655-9, but most of its main chamber has vanished from the Westmeath grasslands. The surviving northeast angle tower still rises ten metres from undressed limestone, preserving thick walls, upper windows and the off-centre south doorway of a larger building. It stands like a corner left behind after the rest departed, watching the same low rise and open countryside that made the castle useful.
