Dean's Grange Cemetery

Dean's Grange Cemetery opened in 1865 after Dublin churchyards suffocated under overcrowding, forcing the Rathdown Union to buy eighty acres from Rev. John Beatty for merely two hundred pounds. The land split into Catholic and Protestant halves beneath yew-lined walkways, where Matthew Gahan built chapels and vaults that still bear his name on iron doors. Over 150,000 people now sleep across sixteen saint-named sections, their graves ranging from premium plots beside main paths to temporary loans that reverted to the board when payments failed. Anastasia Carey became the first buried soul near the Catholic chapel in January 1865, marking the start of a quiet suburban sea of the dead that has kept growing ever since.
