David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty, was born in County Wexford, Ireland, on 17 January 1871. He became Admiral of the Fleet and commanded the Battle Cruiser Fleet at Jutland in 1916. His aggressive contrast to Jellicoe's caution defined that indecisive engagement, while his later role as First Sea Lord shaped the Washington Naval Treaty.
