This white commemorative plaque records: Sir Daniel Gooch BARI DL JP 1816-1889 cable laying and locomotive engineer lived in Clewer Park from 1859 these houses have his armorial bearings Supt. Great Western Railway at 21 and Chairman 1886. Engineer SS Great Eastern laying the first Atlantic cables 1865 & 1866. Buried in Clewer
Sir Daniel Gooch was a prominent locomotive engineer and superintendent of the Great Western Railway at age 21, later becoming its chairman; he is remembered for his role as an engineer on the SS Great Eastern, which successfully laid the first transatlantic telegraph cables in 1865 and 1866.
