Dan Ahearn was born in Athea, County Limerick, in 1888, the younger brother of Tim Ahearne. He left Ireland for the United States in 1909, where officials dropped the final "e" from his surname. Ahearn jumped far enough to hold the world triple jump record until 1924, then became a Chicago policeman and died there in 1942.
