Dallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Dallán is a small rectangular standing stone in County Cork, Ireland, rising fifty-eight centimetres above pasture on a northeast-facing slope. Its long axis points east to west, aligning the marker with the daily path of the sun rather than human ambition. The stone may have guided herds, marked a boundary, or witnessed transactions now forgotten, while surrounding fields continued their ordinary work of growing grass and carrying rain.
In pasture, on NE-facing slope. Stone (H 0.58m; 0.28m x 0.3m) is rectangular in plan, long axis E-W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
