Overview
Dale Castle began as the seat of the de Vale family who governed a small medieval borough beside Milford Haven. Rebuilding in 1910 removed some old work but incorporated the thick-walled southern block into a new fortified-looking home, so the occupied house still carries a partly hidden medieval core rather than standing as a simple modern copy.
Who built and held it
The de Vales, descendants of a knight who joined the Norman advance into Pembrokeshire, established the castle and controlled Dale's manor and borough. Later ownership passed through marriage, including to the Walter family of Roch. That line included Lucy Walter, later associated with King Charles II and mother of the Duke of Monmouth.
Attack, change and use
Dale's protected haven position gave the lord a base near sea traffic, market and farmland, but no well-supported medieval siege belongs to the present house. A major 1910 project removed part of the old castle and rebuilt the residence in a matching fortified style, changing the outward appearance while retaining deeper medieval rooms.
What survives
The southern range is traditionally identified as the castle's main medieval block. It measures about twenty by seventeen metres, has corner towers, walls said to be more than two metres thick and vaulted lower rooms. Those features are enclosed within the private occupied house, so the old and 1910 work can be difficult to separate from outside.
Why it mattered
Castle, church and borough formed Dale's medieval centre near a safe anchorage. Continued private occupation saved heavy masonry but also reshaped it, demonstrating that survival can obscure as well as protect history. The exact house matters because it contains the governing centre of the old borough rather than merely borrowing a castle-like name.
