Explorer Tom Llanwrtyd's Heritage and Arts Centre lives in a former chapel and gives this small town a wonderfully roomy voice. Inside, maps, recordings and local art follow the place from spa visitors to its gloriously peculiar sporting traditions. I reckon the building keeps a spare medal ready for anyone who manages to explain bog snorkelling with a straight face. The nineteenth-century Congregational Chapel was saved and adapted as a public centre, opening in 2016. Exhibits trace the history of Llanwrtyd Wells and the surrounding area, including the sulphur spring that helped turn the town into a visitor destination. Interactive maps show its growth, while recorded memories let residents speak for themselves. A gallery presents work by artists and makers from Mid Wales, with exhibitions changing over the year. The chapel's second life is part of the story: local people kept a landmark useful to their community. Try the maps before exploring the streets outside, then return to a recorded memory or a piece of art that caught your attention. The centre offers a heritage trail, family activities and a small shop; check its current days before travelling because opening changes with the season. Its own site says entry is free and accessible, supported by donations. Volunteer knowledge can turn a curious detail into a better route around Llanwrtyd than any hurried checklist. Leave the chapel with a town made of voices rather than odd headlines. Llanwrtyd has spas, railways, artists, neighbours and plenty of good stories beneath the famous races. If a horse challenges me to a marathon, I shall first inspect its shoes.
