Cruninish Island

Cruninish Island is a lightly grazed drumlin in Lower Lough Erne where water moving down its central ridge creates some of Northern Ireland’s scarcest species-rich wet grasslands. Sharp-flowered rush, grasses and sedges form dense cover for breeding waders, with nearly three nests per hectare, one of the highest densities recorded there. The island remains a rare refuge because gentle management and natural drainage still favour life over exhaustion.
