What is recorded here

A small stone cross from Inchbofin island on Lough Ree now rests in the OPW depot at Athenry, having been lifted from near a church during clearance work. Its looped arms and circular centre still hold the shape of older devotion, while the island, water and time have taken most of the story that made it.

Described by Crawford (1913, 329, 1. (d)) as a ‘slab 1 ft. 9 in. by 1 ft. 8 in. [c. 0.3m x 0.3m]’. It bears a three-line cross with looped terminals and a circular centre. It was found during ground-clearance works in the vicinity of the church (WM015-001----) on Inchbofin island on Lough Ree, Co. Westmeath (Commissioners of Public Works 1913, Appendix E, Slab D) and is currently kept in the OPW depot in Athenry. See WM015-001010- for its original location.
